the thickness of silence and light

Issue 18

Avery Atkins

                   the sky is raining gelatin,

it sticks to my bedroom window.

           such humbling precipitation,

rain and hail bottlenecking in limbo.

         my oranges froze in plasma,

    television spoons me lies.

i’ll chew them up but don’t dare swallow,

      turquoise erodes such shivering eyes.

           truth exists only in backyards,

on back, sprawled in this land without light.

i am the seeds in the glass-canned jam, the galaxy,

the rush of rippling stars, the twinkle in twilight,

suckling sky for a whisper of dew,

                shattering shells full of jello,

and trying to forget what i’ve been.

Avery Atkins (she/her) is a talented overthinker, inspired by Jelly Castle from Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and the Dole mandarin oranges in orange gel she inhaled as a kid. When she’s not making her existential crises sound poetic, Avery can be found finishing up her Creative Writing and Advertising & Public Relations majors for her May 2025 graduation from Susquehanna University, filling what’s left of her limited iCloud storage, and trying to befriend every dog in sight.
